In Washington the finance committee approved the veterans loan bill 13 to 3 after rejecting a substitute. Democrats backed the House measure. six Republicans led by Senator Watson joined. Coursey Named to Investigate Bank Failures

Asheville February report says County commissioners hired W. B. Coursey of Southern Pines to aid the grand jury in banking failures and county public affairs. Mrs. Herbert Hoover, wife of the U S president, arrived in Asheville on February 18 for a visit. The arrival was reported by AP in a brief dispatch noting the First Lady's presence in North Carolina.

Memorial services for Senator L S Overman in Senate

Washington February 18 Memorial services for the late Senator Lee S Overman of North Carolina were held in the senate with more than a dozen senators paying homage. Senator Morrison opened the services and read a tribute from Senator Simmons who was ill. The deceased’s family sat in the gallery and included his widow Mrs Mary M Overman and several relatives. Simmons recalled a close friendship and praised a great career, saying no man in his day was better loved in the chamber.

North and South Carolina Y M C A merger effected

Charlotte February 18 The North Carolina Y M C A voted unanimously to merge with the South Carolina association creating a single regional administration. The move, described as a marriage not burial, follows South Carolina approval and will see officers, a new constitution, and an inter state committee chosen at tonight’s session. George Irving and Dr. Howard Rondthaler headlined the banquet. Frank Smith presided.

Newsboys bill debate splits Raleigh News and Observer

In Raleigh on February 18, Josephus Daniels editor and Frank Daniels business manager testified before the senate welfare committee on a proposed change to the newsboys law. The bill would let 14 to 16 year olds deliver papers from five in the morning to eight at night for two hours daily per shift. Mrs. W. T. Best opposed the measure citing health and welfare concerns. Teale Daniels and J. R. Ward supported it saying hours would not harm schooling. Final action on the bill was not available.

Washington Bill Allocates 850 Million for Exigencies

The house received from the appropriations committee the second deficiency bill for 850,108,000 to cover needs in various departments and 69,940,000 for public buildings nationwide. It is the last money bill of the session, with over 300 building projects outside Washington, and includes 23,668,000 for the Veterans Administration. Notable items include 2,200,000 for the Sunnyvale naval dirigible base, 2,500,000 for national park roads, 1,904,000 for federal penal institutions, 3,000,000 for air mail, and 1,500,000 for the Lexington narcotics farm.

Slain Chicago gangster Marco sought by New York police

Police hunted Frank Marcos attractive blonde companion after his bullet pierced body was found. A woman claimed he was an occupant of a hotel room registered as Mr and Mrs Frank Marco but offered no description. Investigators considered rival rackets or a transfer of Marco’s operations as possibilities.
