American expeditionary force widens its activity along the western front with units east of St Mihiel and artillery aiding the French in Champaign. German ruses fail as American infantry and artillery hold key sectors and clash with German teams amid ongoing bombardment and air raids.
In Perograd on February 18 Polish forces defeated the Boshevie at Bobruisk, 85 miles southeast of Minsk, with further Polish advance toward Smolensk. Romanian forces control the Akkerman district of Bessarabia and threaten Odesa. Kiev casualties estimated at 4,000 dead and 7,006 wounded.
Washington February 18. Railroad executives appearing before the wage commission said they were not opposed to the wage demands of their employees but offered to provide information to help the commission make recommendations for increases.
Stockholm reports February 18 that the Social Democrat announces German forces have resumed war measures against Russia. The first objective cited is the seizure of Estonia and Livonia as the campaign continues.
Petrograd dispatch reports Kiev fell to Bolshevik forces after heavy fighting on Friday. The capture left streets littered with dead and wounded and bombardment by Bolshevik aviators during the height of the battle.
Copenhagen telegraph reports a growing rift between Germany and Austria-Hungary after Russia armistice and Russia war renewal. Austrian newspapers warn Germany against restarting hostilities. Czernin and Wilson are highlighted as pivotal figures in potential negotiations.
London reports show seven killed and four injured from a Saturday aerial attack as six German planes targeted the capital. One bomber struck the southwestern district, another crashed at sea, with damage tallied. A Sunday night raid added 16 dead and 37 injured, official sources say.

City Manager Thomas J. Murphy will attend a trial in Greensboro tomorrow over a wrongful death suit filed by the heirs of Lee Ridge, conductor of the electric shifter for North Carolina Public Service. Ridge died when crushed afterbeing thrown against lumber near a spur track. Plaintiffs seek 20000 in damages from Tate Furniture Co and defendants North Carolina Public Service Co and the city of High Point.
Private reports of rain in the southwest sparked scattered liquidation in the cotton market at the open. Prices slipped 4 to 5 points early, with March around 30.15, May 29.19, July 28.17, while futures opened steady at March 50.20, May 29.74, July 29.20, Oct 28.00, Dec 27.80.
Washington February 18 The Senate Financial Committee unanimously agreed to amend the war finances corporation bill to give President Wilson the power to appoint the directors instead of Secretary McAdoo.
The Senate judiciary committee ordered reported Senator Overman's bill to appoint an additional federal judge in the western North Carolina district. The action was taken on February 18.
Paris reports Charles Humbert a senator from the Mense and owner of Le Journal was arrested this morning as authorities pursue with a high profile inquiry.
The golden Elk anniversary at High Point lodge No 1155 honors the Berthold founders of Elks and celebrates 50 years since the Jolly Corks name changed to Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Mayor W P Ragan and Thomas Murphy praised charity patriotism and community service while noting 33 million dollars invested in lodges and real estate and about 100000 Elks in active service. The event featured a St. Marys church invocation Rev Thomas Lee Trott, a grand address by Mr Murphy, and patriotic songs before refreshments.
Mrs Ruth Parker Phillips died in Winston-Salem and her funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the residence of her aunt on Steele street. Rev Gilbert T Rowe officiated with uncles of the deceased as pallbearers. Survived by husband and eight day old son. Fire damaged a chicken house on Grimes alley. firefighters extinguished the blaze.
Augusta Ga Feb 18 Newton D Baker secretary of war with Surgeon General Gorgas Lt Col Furbus h Major Welsh toured Camp Hancock. He dismissed newspaper talk of moving camps north due to heat and said he must return to Washington with no layover en route.
Stockholm Feb 18 German minority socialists reject Bolshevik ties with Berlin article by Otto Braun. He says Bolsheviks aim to spread revolution to central powers. German soil lacks Bolshevik support. He warns the Bolsheviks overestimating a German revolution and stresses a line between German socialists and Bolsheviks.
The Friends church overflowed with attendees for a memorial service hosted by the W C T U of this city. Rev. James A. Clarke of the First Baptist praised Willard's life in the temperance cause while Rev. Sylvester Newlin linked Willard to Lillian M N Stephens and national prohibition. W C T U and Y P B members offered biblical and W C Willard quotations, with Mari anna White reciting and Grace Wephart and Yarborough assisting musically. The program closed with a prohibition pageant by local youth.
