Mt Airy Man Shot in Nightclub Death

Ronald Austin Penn, 45, was shot in the chest during an argument Sunday evening at a nightclub a mile north of Mount Airy North Carolina. Police questioned another man but did not charge him immediately.

RALEIGH AP Deputy Attorney General I Beverly Lake Jr submitted his resignation to Attorney General Rufus Edmiston last Thursday. Lake, a utilities specialist in the state Justice Department, would not confirm or deny stepping down, saying he is working on a statement to be issued today or Tuesday. A department source said the letter cited personal reasons. He has been with the department since 1960.

Woman Held at Gunpoint Surrenders After Standoff

In Raleigh a man and a woman faced a gun in a public building. Police surrounded the room as the man, identified as Lee, refused to surrender until speaking with Patrolman Randy Carroll. Lee surrendered after several minutes. Mrs. Lee was rushed to Rex Hospital in critical condition.

RALEIGH AP Gov Jim Holfhouser says the speeding incident involving Highway Patrol Commander E W Jones has been blown way out of proportion He was not there and did not know if Jones was speeding but says even if he was it was not a big mistake to crucify him over Jones was stopped for speeding 69 miles per hour in Davie County but got no ticket Trooper W D Grooms of Mocksville did not issue one Transportation Director Jacob Alexander called it a serious mistake for not insisting on a citation The investigation continues with a report due to Holfhouser Last November Jones ordered a crackdown on speeding warning and ticket issuance for violators

Mattress Warehouse Fire Put Out in Asheville

Firemen contained a blaze at a three floor warehouse storing foam mattresses and hideaway beds rented by Sealy of the Carolinas and Peerless Mattress Co of Lexington. Thick black smoke filled the building but the fire was under control within an hour.
