Urban Renewal Brings Family Of Seven To New Home
During a bitter winter in December and January a family of seven lived in a coal heated three room house on Washington Drive. The East Central Urban Renewal Area displaced families like the Smalls who used to rent for 30 dollars monthly and burn coal. They moved into a three bedroom house on Meadowbrook Street with a yard, and monthly payments of 66.25 dollars. The Redevelopment Commission helped with moving costs and finding a home, fulfilling Mrs. Smalls long held wish to own a place.
