Navy plane spots hijacked Anzoategui near Surinam

A Navy P2V from Jacksonville sighted the Venezuelan freighter Anzoategui about 180 miles north of Surinam while it was steered southward at 12 knots. The ship, seized by Communist hijackers, was not near Cuba and was observed as the search widens across the Caribbean.

Africans Flee Bulgaria Amid Discrimination Claims

In Vienna AP reported Ethiopian students left Communist Bulgaria amid charges of racial discrimination by Bulgarian authorities. About 400 Africans were said to be preparing exits with funds or transport help. Ghanaian leaders and others faced arrests and police beatings during protests, while embassies arranged routes to Amsterdam Bonn and Prague for departure.

Kidnaper Of Driver Is Sought

An escapee from Spindale North Carolina prison reportedly hijacked a tractor trailer near Spartanburg South Carolina and abducted the driver. The suspect, identified as James Henry Willis 22, fled toward the south aboard a Florida bound rig marked W B Castleberry.

Civil Rights Lawyer Higgs Convicted in Mississippi

Twelve white jurors convicted civil rights lawyer William Higgs in absentia on a morals charge involving a teen runaway. Higgs received six months in jail and a $500 fine. He was not present at the trial and denied the accusation, which stemmed from statements by the youth who testified Higgs befriended him and engaged in illicit acts.

Three Die In Blaze At Lenoir North Carolina Home

An elderly couple Mr. and Mrs. Carter Estes and their son Troy Estes, 53, died in a Friday night fire ten miles north of Lenoir. Firefighters battled for three hours as the four room frame house burned with bodies found in the living room bedroom and hallway.

Aerialist Falls 35 Feet In Shrine Circus

Mary Lou Lawrence a 25 year old aerialist from Crown Point Indiana plunged 35 feet from a flying trapeze to a concrete floor during a matinee at the Shrine Circus. She remained in critical condition with a fractured skull a broken collar bone and possible internal injuries. The Hollywood sky rocket performed without a safety net amid a 2000 person crowd.
