AEC reports after Bikini Atoll test that a drifting radioactive cloud would create a 140 by 20 mile deadly zone. Shelter and precautions could drastically reduce casualties, with basement or three foot earth cover offering strong protection.
Hundreds of Italian police and ski troops search the blizzard swept Mt Vettore for Sabena DC6 missing since Sunday night. An American search pilot reported possible wreckage near the 6565 foot summit as ANSA relayed sightings of a four engine plane in a ravine on Balzo di Montegallo side.
Washington officials reported business and farm leaders praising Eisenhower's economic philosophy while differing on specifics. NAM chief Henry G. Riter III endorsed the overall plan but noted concerns about lowering corporate taxes scheduled for April 1. Emerson P. Schmidt of the Chamber of Commerce called the program admirable yet criticized housing, minimum wage, and other recommendations. American Farm Bureau president Charles B. Shuman said he agreed with the general thrust but opposed raising the minimum wage and extending the wage floor, and he rejected federal highway funding hikes. The Senate House Economic Committee continued hearings on Eisenhower's economic report.
In Bern three anti-Communist occupiers of the Romanian legation surrendered after a 42 hour siege. Police found the building strewn with propaganda but little damage. Two men willing to give up immediately. the other two seeking absolution from a priest before leaving. The group had vowed to hold the legation until their Red homeland freed resistance leaders. The surrender was announced by Alfred Zehnder, secretary of the Swiss government’s political department.
Former Marine sergeant Theron Hillburn testified that a leaflet section for M. Sgt. William H. Olson, charged with collaborating with the enemy while a POW in Korea, praised Chinese captors and included a vow not to rejoin the Army. Hillburn said Olson wrote the leaflet and shared cigarettes and meals with prisoners.
The House Interior Committee voted 194 to approve admitting Alaska and Hawaii as states. The panel backed an Alaska military reservation proposal and rejected amendments that would have let the President approve state constitutions without Congress.
Three men named Ronald Van Dyke from Grand Rapids and Grandville join the Army at Fort Wayne induction center. Each man has different ages heights and trades and none are related. They head to Fort Leonard Wood for basic training tomorrow.
Republican Leader Martin told President Eisenhower that House passage for the foreign trade program looks likely. The House will debate the measure tomorrow or Friday after an 83 vote from the Rules Committee, which also limited amendments. The bill would extend the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act three years and authorize a 15 percent tariff cut over three years in exchange for concessions to American products abroad. Rep. Reed and Chairman Cooper argued for competitiveness and mutual tariff reductions to aid peace and security.
A 19 month old tipped a gasoline can causing a blast in a Highland Heights basement home 18 miles west of Pontiac. Six people died from asphyxia after the room lost oxygen. victims included Samuel Fowler 29 and his daughter Jeannie 3, Robert Zeller 28 and his wife Anita 22 and their two children Florida Jean 7 months and Robert Jr. 19 months. Firemen recovered bodies among wreckage as Patricia Zeller 16 described the accident.
At a White House briefing Eisenhower spoke with House Leader Martin and Senate Leader Knowland about Formosa but offered no details. Knowland refused to confirm whether talks touched on Quemoy and Matsu, while expressing support for Nationalist aid and broader Pacific policy considerations.
At American Enka Corp in Morristown Tennessee hourly employees voted 607 to 518 against CIO Textile Workers Union of America in a two day NLRB election. Six ballots were void, 1 161 eligible to vote. The Lowland plant has had no union since 1950 after a strike following a prior CIO contract.
New York City officials report knowing who killed Serge Rubinstein, the financier found slain in his Fifth Avenue mansion on January 27. Assistant District Attorney Alexander Herman refused to reveal suspects while Scholz, a 50 year old luxury rental car driver, is held on $25,000 bail.
At a midwinter conference of the American Management Association Rev. Clifford H. Peace of Winston-Salem described a five year pastoral counseling program for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. employees. He reported 3,090 confidential sessions with 1,465 workers and said the service is voluntary and complements but does not replace firm labor policies.
Three Marine fliers from Cherry Point NC parachuted to safety near Richmond Virginia after their propeller driven Skyraider caught fire and crashed. Maj. Godfrey Muller, T Sgt Samuel G Teel, and Pvt James H Wright were aboard en route from Lees Point to Cherry Point. Wright burned first and second degree while Muller and Teel escaped with minor scratches.
Peiping radio cites the Peoples Daily accusing the United States of crimes against humanity over the Tachen Islands evacuation. The broadcast says U S Marines burned killed and abducted residents while assisting Chiang Kai-shek forces, leaving the Tachens ruined and homeless. Refugees say they fled after Communist reports of communist ideology from mainland fishermen.
