In Windsor on February 16, Judge Clayton Moore vacated the temporary receivership of the Henderson properties of the Carolina Telephone and Telecommunication company. The move came on agreement between the City of Henderson and the telephone company.
Hendersonville attorney W. C. Meekins announced his candidacy for chairman of the Republican state executive committee challenging Chairman James S. Duncan of Greensboro. The state convention to elect the chairman will convene in Charlotte on April 4.
S W Kivett was electrocuted in the basement of Clinton cotton mills when he touched part of a generating plant. Funeral services will be held in Asheboro North Carolina, his former home.
In Fayetteville on February 16 AP reports Mrs Clarence B Hood formerly Sunshine Browning of Dunn North Carolina is in a local hospital for treatment of an acute ear condition.
Count Ernst zu Reventlow, a senior aide to Chancellor Weimar, argues in his newspaper that the former Kaiser Wilhelm committed high treason against Germany by a recent act, intensifying the political rift during February.
Washington reports a swift tightening of air mail as the army assumes operation. Fare miles flown to be cut by more than half though service should remain adequate. Primary routes complete with 42 570 miles mapped. commercial flights currently run 95 000 miles daily.
After four days of fighting between Socialists and government troops in Vienna and across Austria, casualties reach between one thousand and one thousand five hundred. Rumors of assassinations target Chancellor Dollfuss and other officials while Socialist guerilla acts and sabotage are reported but unverified. Authority measures include Heimwehr control of fire department lines and mass prisoner holds as Ling and Vienna stations assess funerals access.
The House is slated to pass a 258 million tax bill on Tuesday after Senate recess. The Ways and Means plan faces little doubt despite partisan description as non partisan. Additional items include stock market control efforts and interior department supply funding.

Asheboro, Feb. 16. Police investigated the fatal shooting of William C. Hudson, 21, found shot five times and dying hours later. Glenn Hughes, 21, also of Asheboro, was held for investigation after they were seen riding together before the gunfire. The car stopped, both men alighted, Hudson reentered the vehicle, then lost control and crashed. Hudson died in hospital.
Socialist leaders issued fresh directives after a secret meeting forbidding attacks on soldiers and police while allowing sabotage against utilities and public services. The bitter conflict has cost an estimated 1000 to 1500 lives, and the Christian Social party pressed Chancellor Dollfuss to reconvene parliament, which he dissolved to rule by decree.
Senate investigators heard evidence that officers of American Commercial Alcohol had hidden interests in profits from a syndicate underwriting stock. The syndicate earned one dollar per share on 40,949 shares offered to existing stockholders at twenty dollars, while market prices ranged from eighty to eighty three dollars. Pecora called the profits a cheap form of chiseling as underwriters could have sold directly to stockholders.
Senator Bailey opposes a government factory in Reedsville West Virginia to produce furniture for the post office and other agencies. He argues it would compete with taxpayers and cost workers their jobs while the PWA says 125 coal miners would gain employment. He calls the proposal unsound and notes the shift from skilled furniture workers to nonrelated labor.
The case by Transcontinental and Western Air seeks to stop cancellation of its air mail contract. Judge John C. Knox suggests he may issue an injunction if jurisdiction is met, noting Farley not personally present but citing Postmaster General's broad powers over air mail contracts. About 500 people from nearly every state organization and agency met in Raleigh to discuss needed changes in the public school curriculum and to plan a long term study of the issue.
Springfield Ontario reports Gene P Crandall who claimed to be Mrs Jean P Crandall widow was found to be male and charged with vagrancy. Crandall said he came from El Paso Texas and police arrested him today.
Mr Rieve notes footer restriction compliance is high but warns that modifying it may trigger overproduction in the hosiery industry. He has no set plans to visit mills but will address an open hosiery workers meeting Monday night with details to be announced.
In Miami Beach, Donald Keith Brinson 20 was jailed on vagrancy charges on the eve of a Havana honeymoon with Florence Marks 28. They wed after a 36 hour courtship and planned to fly to Cuba when a warrant was issued at her family’s request. Police questioned Brinson about a possible criminal record as officials pursued annulment.
The civil works administration will drop 400000 rural workers on Feb 23 while city labor remains at 24 hours weekly. Demobilization proceeds at about 10 percent weekly through March toward May 1, shifting to contract work on rural school projects and keeping industrial city staffing at current levels. Hopkins says relief will follow and local social workers will review charges of unfairness.
