The United Steelworkers union struck three can makers Continental Can American Can and Crown Cork and Seal with plants nationwide. Pickets appeared from New York to Los Angeles and Houston to Chicago at 12:01 am. though many plants were closed for the night the impact was unclear with about 36000 steelworkers affected. Negotiations continued with National Can Co.
