Fire caused by pipe wrench on wires at Merced hospital
Investigators determined a pipe wrench left on wiring by workers installing the hospital's automatic sprinkler system sparked the blaze in Merced California. Separately in Tennessee tombstone cutter Bill Shirley uncovered phosphate deposits, details incomplete.

Martial plans shrinking products to boost civilian output
Industrial designer Jacques Martial argues 1951 must keep production up while conserving materials by making products smaller. He cites cars, toasters, vacuums and televisions as examples and says a smaller car could save hundreds of millions of pounds of steel and reduce metal use by about 15 percent.
