House Passes Bill For Negro Graduate Courses In State Colleges
RALEIGH Feb 14 AP The house passed the administration bill to provide graduate and specialized courses for Negroes at two state supported Negro colleges. When demand warrants the North Carolina college for Negroes at Durham and the Agricultural and Technical college at Greensboro will institute such courses. Representative Murphy said it answers the federal mandate and prevents Negroes from entering white institutions. The measure carries no specific appropriation and the house rejected sending it to the appropriations committee. Other actions included a fair sales law bill and a Lake Waccamaw hydroplane base proposal. Fishing license change and calls for FHA investigation also appeared in the day’s business.

Newton February 14. James Ennis of High Point among four on trial for the slaying of R O Hawn of Hickory denied participation in the fatal beating. He testified he was visiting a patient at a Hickory hospital on February 17, 1936, the night of the crime. He contradicted prosecution witness Frank Barnes and said he did not burn a bloody shirt. Ennis and three co defendants Sam Best Mary Boyd and Mose Brown faced trial after a mistrial last December.
