Virginia to Consider Edits to State Song Carry Me Back

Governor Holton says the official state song may be edited to remove offensive language and invites student input. Senator Wilder, the only Black member of the State Senate, calls the song archaic and hurtful, referencing terms like darky and massa and missis. James Bland, born 1854, wrote Carry Me Back and other songs. Editing would not set a precedent, as Virginny was changed to Virginia in 1940.

Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser faces mounting pressure to retaliate after the Israeli bombing of a metal factory near Cairo at Abu Zabal. The raid killed 68 workers and injured 98, the worst civilian toll since 1967. Nasser may delay immediate retaliation while seeking political leverage in Washington and Moscow.
