J D Wiley in 1019 Nathan Hunter back yard story reports a pink car trio tried to fleece him with church cure talk and arm rubbing. A wallet theft claim ended with the woman returning $100 of cash while police pursued a dark skinned trio with out of state tags.
The City of High Point schedules a three million dollar bond sale on March 6 to finance water and sewer improvements. The sale reduces the remaining nine million authorised for utility projects to two million and will be conducted in Raleigh by the State Local Government Commission.
Reverend B Elton Cox of High Point NC, field secretary for CORE, was released on a 7125 cash bond after serving time from a February conviction for participating in a December 15 anti segregation demonstration by 1500 Southern University students. He awaits appeal.
High Point city officials reject Whitener request to address the council as a political figure. Mayor Stout and council members say the body discusses only city matters and will not host political sessions. Whitener, a Conserva tive Party hopeful, sought to air views on urban renewal and tax issues.
Northwood Methodist Church announces a new sanctuary to begin May 1 with an $33,000 Crusade ending Feb 22. Architect Robert Conner of High Point drew the plans for a 84 by 42 foot, 36 foot high building with laminated arches and indirect lighting. The church will seat 296, feature a colored glass triangle window, a choir room, pastor’s study, and a heat pump system. A semi circular drive and bell tower with a donated bell will accompany an attached educational building, kitchen, and fellowship space. Located at Eastchester Drive and Guyer Street, the church is debt free.
three of four ranking police officers who sought the citys police chief job passed oral and written tests disclosed today. Captains J D Wade J R Teague and George Leverette and Lt W H McSwain were examined last night. Names of the three qualifying applicants will be sent to City Manager Harold Cheek for final selection within two weeks.
The Emmanuel Lutheran Brotherhood hosts the annual Scout banquet for Troop 13 in the church Fellowship Hall on Wednesday at 6 30 p m. George Covington former mayor of High Point will speak and present the troop with its charter.
High Point Police Capt J D Wade was named the Exchange Club's Officer of the Year during National Crime Prevention Week. Rep Ed Kemp praised the law system and NC Highway Patrol, noting crime costs average more than 128 dollars per citizen annually. Kemp lauded High Point Municipal Court and trials by jury in North Carolina.

Mrs O Arthur Kirkman was unanimously appointed to the Guilford County Board of Education to fill the vacancy from John R Peacock. She will serve after Peacock’s Feb 20 resignation until the 1963 General Assembly appointment to complete the 1965 term.
About 175 enrollment workers attended the kickoff dinner for the annual YMCA membership drive at the Y. County commissioner Carson Bain gave the keynote, introduced by Bob Allen. YMCA President Harry Bell praised volunteers and introduced campaign co chairs Jack Hawks William Ervin and George Dixon.
Gov Terry Sanford appoints Henry A Foscue president of Globe Furniture Co High Point to the Advisory Committee on Forestry. The committee headed by Richard A Wood of Asheville advises the Board of Conservation and Development on forestry matters.
The city planning commission rejected a discount house and a dry cleaning plant proposal, citing traffic and residential-area interference. A large Negro rental housing project urban renewal plan received full support, with 480 units planned for Meredith Wade streets. The commission also approved River Road Inn expansion, denied a kindergarten zoning change, and gave tentative Oak View Estates subdivision approval. A subdivision dispute on Fair Field Road was sent back to the City Council without action.
A taxi driver William Southern 23 of W Commerce Street was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon for striking Meek Junior Byers with a home made blackjack. Southern was sentenced to 30 days on the roads with 12 month suspension on payment of hospital bills and court costs. Byers 10 stitches. Pearson 21 charged with disorderly conduct and Byers with assault. Other actions include Jimmy Long convicted of beating board bill and malicious damage to personal property with 30 days suspended for 12 months on conditions. Kinslow ordered to pay court costs and bad check amount. Hill 19 charged with check given to South Main Crown Service.
