Twenty six William Penn High School students staged a sit in at the Woolworth lunch counter on S Main Street in High Point as part of a statewide peaceful demonstration against segregated food service. The store closed for the day and the nearby Eckerds soda fountain also shut as protests spread to seven North Carolina municipalities with planned actions in Virginia and South Carolina. Adults B Elton Cox Fred Shuttlesworth and Douglas Moore backed the students as organizers while Moore called it a grass roots movement and Cox noted the plan followed other demonstrations. City officials warned of potential legal implications but the youths remained committed to an integrated dining outcome.

The death of 23 year old Jack Gene Carmichael of Route 3 Thomasville after head injuries from a January 13 motorcycle crash on Chestnut Street raises this year’s traffic fatalities to two, matching all of 1959.
