President Eisenhower warned of hardship from unemployment, predicting March may show a pickup in jobs and the start of an economic recovery. He outlined government steps and said Congress should consider a two billion dollar modernization program for post offices and postal services over three to five years.
Four small Negro children died in a frame-house blaze in Fayetteville. Police and firemen said the Weaver children were alone when the fire started. three suffocated and one burned. Names: Willie Jr 5 Deborah 4 Michael 2 Bruce Gregory 5 months. Father Sgt Willie Weaver Jr stationed at Ft Bragg.
Elvis Presley sports a normal haircut for King Creole and explains he kept his long sideburns. Producer Hal Wallis, who got a deferment, says Elvis finishes the film March 14 and heads to Memphis then Fort Chaffee on March 22 to enter the Army. He expects the army will be a great experience and is not anxious about service.
Sen Harry F Byrd of Virginia announces he will not run again next year amid family illness and a vow to spend more time at home. The Finance Committee chair and longtime fiscal conservative, 71, promises continued public service from the sidelines and focus on Virginia and national government reform.

The program aims to create jobs nationwide and would use private financing under lease arrangements, with government ownership ending after payments. Unemployment rose to 4.494 million last month as Labor reports noted. Senator Aiken urged rapid action and public works to aid the unemployed.
In Smithfield North Carolina the state presented more witnesses in the case against Percy Flowers seeking to close his Clayton area store as a public nuisance. Testimony included claims of whisky sales at the store and involvement of Flowers' associates. Flowers faces multiple charges and awaits further trials after a prior contempt sentence.
Former Russian officer Reino Hayhanen testified at Sgt. Roy A. Rhodes court-martial on espionage charges. He described how Soviet agents are trained and operated, linking Rhodes to meetings in Moscow and to a scheme involving information and money with a Russian mechanic and two women after Rhodes' U.S. Embassy tenure.
Five men died when a car collided head on with a Trailways bus on Highway 501 three miles east of Conway in fog. The bus veered onto the shoulder and rolled. The dead were James Hughes 20 Mack Brown 34 Clem Hudson 25 Kenneth Causey 22 Roy Brown 27 all from Conway area. The bus driver Julius Gainey of Myrtle Beach was uninjured and a Negro woman in the car survived.
A Lansing bill proposes workers compensation for public officials injured in office. It covers incidents during official duties including jaw dislocation in filibusters or bone fractures while shaking hands with the public.
Senator Morse announced a plan to seek a Senate inquiry into federal regulatory agencies adding to a House probe in dispute. He will draft a resolution for a special committee and plans to recover files from Bernard Schwartz claiming White House officials influence. Morse aired the stance on NBC Today.
Delores Newsome 16 was found shot near Ahoskie in Bertie County. AHOSKIE N C Jan Rivers Hackett 16 the son of a highway patrolman confessed while in custody after being linked to the death. He said he drove four hours in his father's car after leaving school with Newsome. An inquest was planned as authorities investigated.
Tunisia calls for France to withdraw all troops from its North African colony, citing 84 dead and 10 missing after Sakiet Sidi Youssef bombing. Bourguiba warns removal of French forces is key to ending colonial remnants and restoring relations. France backed bombing in National Assembly amid NATO briefings.
The Coast Guard will launch another search for disc jockey Melvin West who left Morehead City North Carolina on January 29 in a 16 foot boat bound for Bermuda. He has not been seen since and carries no radio transmitter. Search depends on luck. Mrs Esther West asked for the operation at the two week mark. This is his second Bermuda voyage attempt and the second time a search was requested after the coast guard previously recovered him 160 miles short of Bermuda last October.
