London dispatches report German broadcasts claiming Marshal Zhukov is poised to open the Berlin battle as Russian forces make rapid advances across Silesia and Pomerania. They cite Zhukov near Stettin and Konev pushing toward Breslau with multiple bridgeheads and disrupted German rail lines.
The war narrative notes Western Allies advancing toward Kleve and Ruhr while Red Army forces push deeper into Germany. British estimates warn morale and material strains persist, with Germany still capable of prolonged resistance despite signs of Nazi defeat.

In Williamsburg Virginia the Flat Top student weekly of William and Mary is temporarily suspended after an editorial by 22 year old editor Marilyn Kammerle from Jackson Michigan urging assimilation and marriage among Negroes. President Pomfret says there will still be a Flat Hat this week while editorial supervision is set up. Kammerle’s father calls the editor's stance a risky move but says she is reliable and bright.
In Manila Feb 12 Japanese defenders were squeezed into a narrow triangle between Manila Bay and the Pasig River as American forces advance. Maj. Gen. Verne D. Mudge's First Cavalry pushed from the East after fording the Pasig, sealing the enemy in the ninth day of the battle for the capital. Maj. Gen. Robert S. Beightler's 37th Infantry pressed through Ermita and along the bay shore amid artillery fire from Japanese guns.
Gov. Cherry reviewed the case of Elmer Hardie Biggs William Dalton Biggs and John Edgar Messer sentenced to die in the gas chamber for the 1943 killing of E. J. Swanson Jamestown storekeeper. The youths from Stokes Rockingham counties and Washington DC were convicted in 1943 and again after a new trial.
London dispatch reports a Nazi decree forcing all German women and girls into auxiliary service with the Volkssturm under Heinrich Himmler. The Berlin radio adds a plan for marriage by telegraph to aid troops at Atlantic strongpoints, allowing absentia marriages by declaration.

British 36th Division troops 95 miles northeast of Mandalay capture the Burmese town of Myitson on the south bank of the Schwell river and engage Japanese forces in the surrounding jungle, alree headquarters announced today.
In Manila the battle to seize the city continues amid fires and debris. Allied troops including the 37th Infantry and first cavalry close in from the Pasig river to the bay front. Ermit a cemetery area near the water front saw some of the heaviest fighting yesterday.
