Charles T. Pierce, a bank clerk, faces a plea of not guilty to charges that he stole $207,000 in U S government bonds from the New York bank vaults where he worked. Married with one child, he said he is too poor to hire a lawyer.
North Carolina February report on bond adjustments for Central Bank and Trust Company officers. J. Charles Bradford’s bond reduced from 10 900 to 5 000 after his suicide attempt. other defendants Wallace B. Davis L. L. Jenkins Russell C. Davis retain bonds of 15 000 15 000 and 10 000. Hearing ends with limited testimony and brief defense pleas.
The 75 year old Mount Pleasant affiliated institute will close as the United Evangelical Synod of North Carolina dissolves the school. Trustees face a 20000 debt after the synod cancelled its agreement and left closing duties to the trustees amid a heated dispute between Col. G. F. McAlister and Dr. H. B. Schaeffer.
In Washington on February 12 AP reports the administration’s proposal to lend 40 percent on face value of veterans certificates. Hawley and the committee weighed two loan increase plans as a vote on relief was expected later in the day.
Newton February 12. United Evangelical Lutheran Synod of North Carolina votes 89 to 29 to permit churches to replace the common cup with individual cups. Two ministers request exemption from services using individual cups. one minister protests. Some continue to retain the common cup. Synod to complete its business later today.
The senate campaign funds committee, probing the Southern Methodist anti Smith clues, questioned bankers about 1928 deposits to the Virginia anti Smith committee later transferred to Bishop James Cannon Jr. The panel weighed further hearings as Perry Lea testified on a $18 605 transfer to Cannon’s personal account and William Tyler Page noted filing delays for the Cannon campaign report.
Pope Pius XI broadcast twice from Vatican City marking the first global radio outreach by the Catholic Church. Guglielmo Marconi introduced him, and the pontiff praised radio as a tool to spread faith while thanking the inventor. The event drew church dignitaries and an official ceremony at the academy of science.
Washington February 12 President Hoover will mark Lincoln's birthday with an evening radio address to Republican organizations nationwide. Congress pursues routine agendas as he spends the day with official duties and ceremonial plans by churches and schools.
Washington Feb 12 Senator Norris Republican Nebraska introduced a resolution calling for a federal trade commission investigation of the cement industry to determine if price agreements violate anti trust laws.
North Carolina highway commission proposes to resign if Governor Gardner’s legislation passes. The resolution, to be signed by John Sprunt Hill and presented by Alex Hanes, pledges resignations to the governor upon passage of proposed reforms to state and county road administration.
The North Carolina General Assembly opened with a push of votes and bills. The House debated unseating Buncombe clerk B L Lunsford amid a two hour vote that ended 41 to 68, while the Senate killed a bill to impeach witnesses and passed measures on oleomargarine sales, nurse education standards, and land parcel tax payments. The body also invited former Governor Alfred E. Smith to address the legislature and considered a two mill tax on electrical energy.
Hickory February 12. Pool room proprietor H A Armstrong reported a cork leg stolen from his home. He said he wants the leg recovered immediately, and police were skeptical until the missing limb was identified as a cork prosthesis.
RALEIGH February 12 Governor Gardner said he had nothing to say regarding the scheduled electrocutions tomorrow morning of Dave McRae of Scotland County and Thomas Henry Bardon of Vance County Bardon was sentenced for first degree burglary and McRae for murder Both men are slated to die under the state capital punishment program.
The North Carolina General Assembly voted unanimously to invite former New York Governor Alfred E Smith to address both houses. Committees were appointed to visit Smith at Pinehurst to extend the invitation during his weekend stay.
Washington on February 12. Vice Chairman Stone of the farm board warned that a 1931 tobacco growth equal to the 1920 increase would spell disaster for growers. He cited 1930 excess bright leaf tobacco at 50 to 60 million pounds and burley stocks up 30 to 40 million, noting drought did not prevent a larger 1930 rise. He predicted 1931 output may rise as much over 1930 as 1930 did over 1929, with bright flue cured and burley used for cigarettes.
In Minneapolis on February 12 a modern beggar named William Burkholder used an automobile to visit housewives along his route instead of walking. Police said he called on the housewives by car. A judge sentenced him to 90 days in jail.
Washington report notes the $20 million drought loan fund may be used for food and clothing purchases. Secretary Hyde told the Senate there could be no prohibition against using the funds for drought stricken farmers. Senators Robinson Caraway and Borah welcomed the stance though Borah reserved final support. Leadership hoped for a vote, but turbulence in the Senate delayed action.
Pasadena February 12 Major Richard M Cannon son of Bishop James Cannon Jr faces sentence after conviction for violating state labor laws. He was found guilty in justice court of failing to pay $33 salary to Phyllis Cace who taught at an El Monte military school tied to him. Nine similar cases are pending.
In Washington a mail truck carrying 28 sacks of registered pouches from the Federal Reserve Bank in New York to the treasury was robbed in Union Station. The clerk Peter Johnson was beaten with a lead pipe. robbers escaped with mutilated currency halfs, weighing about 72 pounds per sack, while police and officials hunted for three to four suspects seen in a large black touring car. authorities released one suspect after Johnson failed to identify him.
