Governor Benjamin Smith Tried New Ideas
North Carolina governor Benjamin Smith of Brunswick County, a wealthy planter, pursued reforms such as a penitentiary system and public education. He served years in the General Assembly, helped charter UNC, gave Tennessee land for Smith Hall, and owned Orton Plantation and Bald Head Island. His death date remains contested, with inscriptions stating January 1826.
