A US Marine Private dressed in a black leather jacket tried to hijack a Pan American DC6 in Da Nang with a .45 pistol. After 2 hours 45 minutes a four star general authorized action and tear gas forced the assailant to stop. Marine Pfc William Lee Clark of the 1st Division’s 1st Field Artillery Group was arrested. no charges filed yet pending investigation. 83 servicemen aboard for rest and recuperation to Hong Kong. Pilots and crew identified as John P. Jones E L Archer and Robert H Clack.
A Kennedy aide says the New York senator’s sharp Vietnam critique does not signal a planned broad assault on Johnson’s war strategy. Kennedy says he will discuss Vietnam but not wage a systematic challenge to current policies, noting belief a military victory may not be in sight.
North Vietnam proposed talks with the United States to end the war, conditioning negotiations on authentic U S troop withdrawal and referencing the 1954 Geneva agreements. Foreign Minister Nguyen Duy Trinh also framed talks around Geneva as a basis, with Giap vowing to continue fighting until victory.
