Forests Dominate North Carolina Land Use and Economy
State forests cover 62 percent of land with 195.1 million acres of commercial forest. Wood products employ over 2,500 establishments and about 130,000 workers with near 900 million in payrolls. Farmers own 43 percent of forests, misc private owners 36 percent, and government 9 percent. The state leads in furniture shipments and plywood production, supports 2.2 million acres of developed recreation, and hosts the first U.S. forestry school at Biltmore with programs at Duke and NC State.
