Tarawa Veteran Seeks Home as Marines Moved Fast
John Emmons Grant a 19 year old U S Navy coxswain who joined the service three years ago recalls Tarawa as the fiercest battle. He says the biggest thing in a serviceman s life is home and notes that many prisoners praised American Marines while conceding Tarawa showed Japanese resolve. Grant recounts three days in a foxhole on the beach and details of fortified pillboxes and three remaining Japanese aircraft. He lists Coral Sea Solomons Santa Cruz and Midway among his 14 engagements and observes that mail from home supports morale. He hopes for early relief for veterans returning from battle zones and mentions his family in Putnam Avenue.
