Three judges of the United States circuit court of appeals ruled that the merger of Standard Oil of New York and Vacuum Oil does not violate the 1909 Standard Oil decree or restrain trade. The deal combines Socony with 434 million in capital stock and 708 million in assets with Vacuum’s 128 million capital and 205 million assets into a worldwide petroleum products company. The crime occurred around 1 am February 1 in Anderson involving Julian Pennell a 25 year old white man from a prominent local family and George Anderson a 22 year old Black man. In Chicago on February 7 a suit for an accounting of the 139000 flood relief fund raised by Mayor William Hale Thompson in 1927 was filed in superior court. The suit, brought for Charles S. Detroit February 7. Chee ter La Mare a leading West Side gangster was shot to death in his Grandville avenue home kitchen last midnight, six hours before a planned grand jury custody. Police hold widow Anna and a wounded man, Tony Marino, as inquiries continue into the slaying and its linkage to crime conditions.
