Viet Cong Shells Four Airfields Ahead of Tet Truce

Viet Cong shelled four South Vietnamese airfields as U S and South Vietnamese forces report 143 Communist soldiers killed in ground fighting. U S air raids press before the Tet cease fire while weather limits strikes. A U S Air Force observation plane and a rescue helicopter are downed in North Vietnam with crews missing. The Tet truce begins at 7 am Wednesday and Allied forces begin defensive posturing for four days.

Goldberg to visit Asia on fact finding trip

U S ambassador to the United Nations Arthur J. Goldberg announced a broad tour of Southeast Asia and beyond. He told reporters at the White House that the mission is a fact finding effort for President Johnson, not a peace mission, with Vietnam and the Philippines on the schedule and possible stops in Burma and Europe.

Freak Water Spout Strikes Cape Hatteras Light Station

The Diamond Shoals light station near Cape Hatteras was hit by a freak water spout with winds over 100 mph. No crew injuries. heavy damage to the station with all 20 lantern gallery panes blown out and the main light and radio beacon inoperative. The four-man crew activated a standby light and reported the sudden gusts and rapid subsidence. Commissioned November 7, the structure stands on four steel legs 156 feet below the sea and 120 feet above.
