President Kennedy sent a bill to raise the federal minimum wage from 1.00 to 1.25 with phased yearly increases. The background tunes include muted trumpets sax piano and violin provoking surprise from reporters and a lawyer during court recesses. A phone company spokesman cites possible induced radio or restaurant music via the line.
Snow fell across the Central Plains from Nebraska to northern Texas with parts of Kansas and Oklahoma seeing heavy snow. Hazardous driving conditions and up to four inches were warned in northern Arkansas to southern Ohio. Freezing rain and sleet hit areas between Arkansas and Kentucky while a rain snow mix affected western Montana to Nevada. Texas reported snow near Eagle Pass, and Northeastern states endured deep snowfall while Great Lakes waters faced ice jams on the Ohio River. Temperatures ranged from below freezing to the 50s and 70s in Florida.
Thirty eight passengers from the liner Santa Maria arrive in Miami after a mid voyage seizure by rebels led by Capt Henrique Galvao. WASHINGTON The new Pentagon team concludes there is no missile gap favoring the Soviet Union at present. The review ordered by President Kennedy finds equal US Soviet strength and notes uncertainty about future gaps. The findings align with Eisenhower's earlier warning and support reinforcing U S defenses and Polaris submarine and limited war capabilities.
