A letter from a recruit’s father spurred the probe. officials say no charges have been filed against instructors and claims of a steel bar lack substantiation.

In Raleigh a 58 year old retired textile executive was sworn in by Chief Justice J Wallace Winborne before a joint session of the 1957 General Assembly at Memorial Auditorium Hodges became the first Tar Heel governor in this century to succeed himself The inaugural rites were televised as officials and guests including two neighboring governors observed the ceremony delayed to February by a constitutional change and a later legislative convening
The General Assembly rushed a bill through to raise Council of State members pay from 10 000 to 12 000 a year and the attorney general from 12 080 to 13 500 as term start today. The measure also extends retirement benefits and sets per diem living expenses for legislators in Raleigh.
