The Great Flood of 1796 at Salem North Carolina
In January 1796 a severe flood transformed the Salem area as icy waters surged down the Wa creek. Brothers William Hall and Frederick Ellridge struggled through the river to reach a mill, facing freezing exposure, entanglements, and heroic attempts by brethren to rescue them using a raft and a tub. Hall died after hours of peril, while Ellridge survived with help from supporters who reach them at sunset.
