Labor Driving Postal Prices Up in Push for Subsidy
RALEIGH 11 reports labor costs drive the postal budget and slow mail volume. About 60,000 of 700,000 employees are bargaining units led by the National Association of Letter Carriers with average salaries around 14 000 to 16 000 including fringes. Officials seek a 15 billion federal subsidy to offset deficits and outline plans to cut costs through closing offices selling real estate and mechanizing while warning of higher future postage.
