Prices of stocks, cotton, lard and other commodities fell again amid a broad market decline. New York stocks dropped sharply, with many issues hitting new lows for the year or longer, as the week’s losses followed a prior plunge and broad market action.
The AFL executive council announced willingness to form a new worldwide federation with the CIO and other non communist unions. They criticized the WFTU as Soviet dominated and urged free trade unions to withdraw. Discussions would occur with global free unions regardless of size, aiming for a democratic international body.
A Republican congressman argued that declines in prices and employment could lessen the need for rent controls and urged waiting on Truman anti inflation powers. Rep Wolcott of Michigan proposed a six month extension of ceilings as is and suggested examining economy over 90 days to decide if controls are still needed. He also urged similar restraint on other measures while noting rising unemployment and cautious food price drops.
Congressional committee hearings on a proposed wage hike reveal opposition to two provisions. Democrats and some Republicans threaten a tie vote that would block action. The measures would extend the federal wage law to activities affecting commerce and include farm workers in minimum wage protections.
New York fed reports show a pause in wage gains as arbiters deny 10 cent per hour increases for 57 000 textile workers in New England and cotton mills earlier actions affect the broader industry. Observers doubt a general rise in textile wages amid softer demand and buyer’s market pressures.
Washington February 5. Democrats vow unanimous opposition to Senator Knowland California Republicans plan to move a two thirds gag rule. Southern Democrats oppose civil rights measures and threaten to block motions with filibusters as Congress faces a busy week in Lincoln celebrations and packed calendars.
Oklahoma Senator Kerr defends Democratic record and criticizes Republican leaders for not waking up after the November defeat. He told North Carolina Young Democrats that GOP veterans live in the shadows of the past and their young stay behind them, urging a shift in approach.
Sherwood Reeder city manager of Richmond Virginia told the North Carolina City Managers association banquet that federal and state aid are needed to fund school facilities and improved transit fares. The two day conference drew managers from South Carolina and Virginia. Reeder also urged efficiency gains and waste elimination in municipal government. Roxboro City Manager Colin F Churchill spoke on water and sewer main extensions and said policies should not favor new users at the expense of existing ones.
Vatican circles reject the Mindszenty treason case as described by Memento Sera. L Osservatore Romano states the Cardinal makes mechanical gestures and that the church has no credence in the proceedings or his confessions.
A Russian Commodore and 150 officers visit Scotland to view the Scotland versus Wales rugby international. Commodore Petreshev leads a party aboard the 29,000 ton battleship Royal Sovereign, loaned from Britain in 1944 and being returned.
The American Legion state wide post officers meeting continues this morning with the post officers conference and committee meetings. Last night 200 Legion registrations 100 auxiliary and 250 40 and 8 members were listed. By Monday the conference is expected to total over 800 Legion and Auxiliary attendees.
Thirteen men were initiated in a statewide wreck yesterday afternoon by Greensboro Voiture 506 wrecking crew. Ray Alexander of Greensboro led the event with J B Alexander as chef de gate. Initiates included C A Light J B Gentry and G T Smith of Leaksville Wade Lemons of Madison R E Roedicker and P C Smith.
Edmonton Alberta reports two planes searched Fort Ross a remote outpost inside the Arctic Circle. No signs of life were found among trappers or mounted police. A village nearby showed a group of people whose identity was unclear. A radio transmitter failed to reach ground occupants.
The Congregational Christian Churches General Council voted 757 to 172 for a merger with the Evangelical and Reformed Church, forming a potential United Church of Christ. An anti-merger faction vows action to oppose union, citing local church autonomy and ecumenicity.
In Budapest the Cardinal Mindszenty faced treason charges as prosecutors sought the death penalty for him and six co defendants. He urged God to guide the court so the verdict might aid world peace and settlement at home and abroad.

Gusts up to 41 mph and zero visibility hit the Nebraska and Dakota disaster area as rescue work slowed. Chadron Nebraska saw 30 mph winds, Sinclair Wyoming 40 mph, with cold air pushing in from the north and temperatures plunging across North Dakota.
The Hoover commission considers appointing a civilian chairman over the United States joint chiefs to curb inter service rivalry while proposing to keep army navy and air force secretaries as undersecretaries. It also favors shifting military budgets and authority to the defense secretary and warns Congress may reject demeaning the service secretaries. The plan aims to centralize power, cut costs, and end budget squabbles though final proposals await Congress. The current joint chiefs are General Hoyt Van den Berg, General Omar Bradley, and Admiral Louis Denfeld.
Raleigh reports the North Carolina Medical Society backs a bill to ban rebates on eyeglass related items. Dr. James F. Robertson of Wilmington said the practice is unethical and conflicts with medicine. The executive committee reaffirmed the stance and the bill will be introduced in the General Assembly.
