Plan to Have Air Lines Pay Fees Is Considered
Washington February 6 Rep Stefan Neb chairman asks the civil aeronautics administration to say if commercial airlines should pay for use of the federal airways system. The inquiry follows a commerce department report proposing a federal aviation tax and other charges. The report says aid to aviation is justified for national defense but should be recovered when mature, with a cent and a half per gallon aviation gasoline tax or a 2 percent passenger revenue and 1 percent cargo revenue tax producing about $5 million annually. Some officials warn airlines are not financially ready to pay. A Senate panel released two airport lists from the air transport association and pilots, estimating initial airfield costs.
