Ante Bellum UNC Memories From Capt Thorpe’s War Tales
Captain John H. Thorpe recalls the spring 1860 UNC graduating class marching to war. Only two survivors remain, Thorpe and Daniel R. Coleman. He speaks of antebellum campus life, the two literary societies, Phi and Dialectic, their discipline and influence, and early campus politics with President Buchanan's 1859 visit. He notes no organized athletics then and cherishes memories of Carolina fellowship.
