Lawmakers back Smoky Mountains National Park plan
North Carolina faces a $2,000,000 initial appropriation to acquire 75,000 acres as part of a 150,000 acre national park. Supporters argue the project will boost state development and tourism, with Cammerer citing rising park visitation and Yankee and European tourist trends. Decision lies with joint appropriations committees after a Feb 9 hearing.

License Issuance Bill Hearing Set for Tuesday
In Raleigh on February 5 a packed gallery saw a motion pass to shift automobile license issuance from the fiscal year to the calendar year with a final reading due Tuesday. The bill, with a proposed 25 cent per plate fee for six month plates, drew debate over revenue use and which fund benefits. Senators Rivers Johnson and others argue savings and timing. Hargett and Grier oppose citing license affordability. The question of fee allocation remains unresolved, pushing decision to next week.
