The plant on Reed Street expanded to six pits cooking about 2,600 pounds at a time, with weekly output around 6,200 pounds. Vaccine dispute questions BCG to wipe out TB
Dr. David T. Smith of Duke urges mass BCG vaccination to end TB, arguing 80 percent protection for up to 10 years. The U S Public Health Service warns against group use, citing potential missed diagnoses and surveillance challenges. A federal panel favors limited BCG use only for those with unavoidable exposure and cannot obtain supervised treatment. The debate centers on wariness of masking infection with tuberculin tests and the availability of effective drugs today.
