President Eisenhower suggested a tax cut could be recommended by midyear if the anticipated upturn in US business fails to develop. He said a cut would stimulate business but cautioned against overdoing it as inflation concerns linger and the recession remains through the near term.
Carl E. Burton gave up at Paducah police HQ after a long chase that began with the Missouri kidnapping of Trooper William Little. Burton and Harold Davis hijacked the trooper and his car, held the Sheltons hostage, and fled across four states before Burton surrendered saying the pressure was too great.
Florida suffers a third freeze damaging citrus and vegetables. Low ground citrus and new plantings face greatest danger. Pastures ruined, cattle starve, and the flower industry nears total destruction as tourists delay arrivals. Some fleeing to the Caribbean.

Republican leaders oppose moving satellites and space weapons out of the Pentagon. A Senate House committee drafted compromise language allowing continued development of missiles and satellites under Defense control for a year.

An 11 year old white girl was assaulted and slashed by a group of teenage boys on a Chicago South Side street. Police held 11 youths for questioning. four released. Officers searched neighborhoods, found weapon fragments, and recovered items near the scene. The girl remained in fair condition at Englewood Hospital.
An F86 jet fighter and a B47 bomber collided during a night exercise above the Savannah River basin. The fighter pilot parachuted to safety near Estill Georgia, while the bomber landed at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah with all crew uninjured. Maj. Howard Richardson led the Homestead Florida crew. Helicopters searched fields and woods as night investigators worked findings.
The Navy’s Vanguard rocket exploded seconds after lift off at 2:33 a.m. from Cape Canaveral as it climbed about 20 000 feet. Officials cited a fuel line leak on the prior test and warned odds of reaching orbit remained about 1000 to 1. The attempt aimed to place a small moon into orbit beside the Army’s Explorer satellite.
