Soviet Drive Parallels Big Push as War Rages
Soviet communique claims 27 German gun positions smashed with 4000 officers and men killed or wounded in one fortified area. Reports say another center of resistance fell after German retreat, with over 1000 deaths. Three areas show Red Army pressure west of Moscow toward Smolensk, between Kursk and Kharkov, and in the Donets Basin toward Dneprovnsk. Analysts doubt a spring offensive without key bases near Leningrad, Vyazma, Orel, and Kharkov. Germans still strike Moscow as air raids continue. Egypt notes 12 000 square miles cultivated of 383 000 square miles total.
