High Casualty List For Reds and Red Risk Near Wonju
Block by two Reds platoons northeast of Wonju. Hoengsong lies 55 miles east of Seoul and 10 miles north of Wonju, 33 miles south of the 38th parallel. U S patrols have entered Hoengsong but the town remains unoccupied. Front reports note Red concentrations near a zone where French and American troops recently clashed. Pyongchang, 25 miles east of Wonju, is now held by U S units with patrols reaching Hupyong two miles north. Pyongchang controls an important road from Wonju to Kangung on the east coast. Small Red bands roam the hills around Pyongchang. The UN debates whether to cross the 38th parallel. MacArthur's headquarters have not issued new directives. UN and U S officials stress the drive north aims to locate and destroy Communist forces, not reclaim ground. Seoul lies 30 miles south of the parallel and the Han River. In Pusan President Syngman Rhee calls UN action severe enough to deter aggression now and in the future, opposing any stop at the 38th parallel. Rhee warned that only pro Communist positions would support such a line. Other notes include trivia on car horns and early medical milestones.
