American officers report elation over the first artillery duel with German gunners in France. They praise prompt barrage responses and effective fire, noting aerial reconnaissance shows heavy damage to German positions while American trenches suffer minor harm.
Richmond, Feb 4 Dr Lemuel Johnson a North Carolina dentist was indicted by the grand jury for the murder of his bride Mrs Alice Knight Johnson who died last December in Richmond. The charge claims he administered poison to her as a medicinal preparation with criminal intent and the trial date will be set soon.
J C Payne longtime Camp Sevier post office supervisor spends days in the city with his family. He says the office employs 27 workers and handles about 50 000 letters daily, serving soldiers. Payne previously worked at the local post office.
Henry Allen died Saturday afternoon at his parents home 121 Snowstreet. He was 19. The body was taken to Lexington for funeral services and interment.
The local draft examinations were postponed after a telegram from the provost marshal general ordered stopping until new regulations arrive. The board postponed tests for February 4 and 6 to February 11 and 12, while those scheduled for February 6 must appear as notified.
Secretary Baker warns the nation against letting strike reports or internal disturbances in Germany disrupt wartime prep. Washington February 4. Federal Trade Commission hearing heard Henry F E Wise, attorney for paper manufacturers, claim draft board orders require mobilizing all registered accountants. Wise, NY draft board chair, said accountants must pass physicals to fill vacancies in the army's organization, noting delays in assembling information due to lack of accountants.
The past exalted rulers of all Elks lodges will chair events for Elkdom's 50th anniversary. The local lodge plans a food drive and general festivities on February 16 with a forthcoming official program to be announced.
Garland Thomas Weaver seven months old son of Mr and Mrs Percy Weaver of 307 Park Street died after a short illness Saturday. Funeral services conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 30 from the residence by Rev Mr Wall of Green Street Baptist Church interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments on April 19 in the North Carolina case challenging the constitutionality of the child labor law. The ruling below held the act invalid.

Funeral services for J. Garland, aged and respected citizen, who died Saturday afternoon at 3, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 from the White Oak Street home. Rev. James A. Clarke of the Bene Firat Baptist church will officiate before interment at Onkwode cemetery.
