Key Commodities Fall In Price During Week
Prices of several key commodities tumbled this week while experts say inflation still dominates. Gasoline retreated to December levels in many regions as crude dropped about 10 cents from January’s 35 cent rise. Steel scrap prices fell sharply though Lake Superior iron ore rose 60 cents per ton. Farm prices continued to inch up, cigarettes may rise another penny, and Washington economists warn of higher prices and wages ahead with automatic wage hikes in multiple sectors. Harvard’s Galbraith cautioned the worst may be yet to come. U S Steel and Bethlehem Steel reported record Q4 earnings and raised dividends while predicting higher orders and output, despite automaker demand woes. Bethlehem’s chairman challenged talk of industry trouble.
