Washington February 3 The United Mine Workers leader John Lewis warned he could use any independent action to initiate benefit payouts from a $50 million untapped welfare fund. Operators fear an April 1 strike by 400,000 miners unless a plan is agreed.
About 3 million German workers launched a 24 hour hunger strike affecting Hamburg to Stuttgart. Raleigh February 3 Fire Chief A B Lloyd announced the department would stop searching the fire wrecked Carolina country club where five people are believed dead. Debris removal uncovered a trunk thought to contain either James E Baker age 40 or his 14 year old son James Sr. Mrs. Baker about 40 was found at the club edge. Other presumed victims include Jean Baker 16 and Carrie E Lyndall of Baltimore and Norfolk. No cause is yet identified.
The CIO led by President Philip Murray condemned any cut of up to 1.8 billion dollars from the 6.8 billion Marshall Plan starting cost. He argued the European Recovery Program must run past mid 1952 and rejected turning over 500 American ships, saying a strong US merchant marine is vital.
Across India mobs attacked members of two militant Hindu groups Mahasabha and RSS as anger rose over Gandhi's assassination. Police arrested many leaders for questioning while others faced beating and stoning. The groups are described as rightist with private volunteer youth armories.
