American forces retook Subic Bay facilities on Luzon as Olongapo Naval Base and Grande Island were captured with little resistance. General MacArthur announced use of the anchorage and ongoing naval base development. Sixth Army moved toward Columpit as Seventh Fleet entered Subic Bay.
Dr Logan Clendening aged 60, famed for a daily health column reaching millions, killed himself in his Kansas City home. Detective Benton Tibbs said he slashed his left wrist and cut his jugular vein, body found in a shaded bedroom clad in blue silk pajamas. He had feared leukemia, though no note was found.
Paris reports First and Ninth Army divisions breaking into the central Siegfried line. They penetrate deep and erase the Christmas bulge in the American First Army front, signaling a significant Allied advance in the sector.

The home lacked a required license but officials said no fire hazard was believed present. Three women and five children escaped, including nurse Rosa Cote. The victims include children of war workers and servicemen, one father having never met his child.
The Senate voted 43 to 41 to delay action on Henry Wallace's cabinet nomination marking a slender administration victory. A Bailey motion tied 42 to 42 before Taft changed his vote to allow reconsideration. the session then focused on the George measure to separate the lending agency from the Commerce Department. The chamber later approved taking up the George Bill 83 to 2.

An unimpeachable source says Churchill will push at the big three conference for a four power government to govern the Rhineland and Ruhr after Germany's defeat. The plan envisions separating the regions from Germany under Britain, Russia, the United States and France with economic and political control. The source also says an instrument of surrender signed by Winant Strang and Gusev may be presented to Germany upon capitulation. The big three may also discuss occupation zones and Austrian affairs with shared allied control.
American B 29 bombers from Brig. Gen. Roger M Rameys 20th bomber command attacked Singapore area for the third time today daylight missions based from India. Details to be released with operational reports. Past raids targeted naval installations and shipping at the Malay Peninsula port.
A wrecked plane found near Tucson Arizona has been identified as a 2-25 bomber missing from Kelly Field since January 20. Public relations officers say no crew report has been received but relatives of four crew members and a passenger have been notified. One named individual is Maj. Francis L. Lowthe M. C. of Wilmington North Carolina.
Raleigh Feb 1 bills to overhaul North Carolina insurance laws were introduced by Rep Taylor of Wayne and a senator. The measures align with recommendations from a special commission appointed by former Governor Broughton.
