Reports indicate martial law in Hamburg and Bremen amid widespread strike action across Germany with 700000 workers idle in Berlin. Police seized union buildings and labor leaders were arrested as the unrest spreads, while frontier reports note limited momentum and varied international reaction.
Paris and the surrounding suburbs report 114 and 76 injuries respectively from the German air raid Wednesday night. Death toll remains 20, with updated figures reflecting new casualty counts as authorities review the scene.

Funeral services for Rev Albert Peele aged eighty were held at Guilford College with Rev Sylvester Newlin and Rev J Edgar Williams presiding. Peele a prominent Quaker preacher lived 64 years in Guilford county and leaves four children including Rev Joseph Peele. He had pastored in Kernersville and Pilot Mountain and his last sermon was at Pilot Mountain before illness.
Rome reports Austrians struck yesterday on the Asiago plateau to dislodge Italians from Monte Di Cal Bella positions, but failed to reach the Italian line. Italians widened their front at dawn to the Frencella valley in the same sector.
London February 1. In the house of commons Andrew Bonar Law denied the claim that Entente war aims would be drawn up by a Paris conference. He called the assertion incorrect and stated no such conference was planned.
George T. Penny and J. T. Millikan announce a major sale by American Land Company of 10 large companies around St. Petersburg Florida. The event, worth about 2 000 000, is set to begin on or about February 15 and will extend over several days.

Women prisoners appeal to be allowed to help clothe the army and navy by knitting. Proposal calls for installing knitting machines in all women's penal institutions. A knitting operator can reportedly produce sixty sweaters daily.
Secretary Daniels commends Fireman John P. Smith on a ship at Norfolk Virginia for bravery in rescuing a shipmate from drowning January 12. Smith’s home is Denver Colorado.
Augustus Phillips, minister from The Netherlands, will arrive in Washington soon to succeed Chevalier van Rappard. He will be accompanied by Jonkheer W. M. DeBeaufort, counselor of the legation, who previously served in Washington. Rappard sails for Holland after the arrival of his successor and attaches to the foreign office.
In Bessemer City on February 1, a planned vaudeville show at the graded school by soldiers near Grover was canceled as a precaution after a case of meningitis appeared nearby. The town and school were quarantined, and there will be no performance.
Richmond Virginia February 1 Governor Stuart appointed James M Lewis of Essex County as state fish and game commissioner to serve the unexpired term of the late John S Parsons ending February 28 Parsons ended his life with a gun last Sunday.
Funeral services for Donald Halker 11 months old son of Mr and Mrs Harry Halker were conducted at the family home Wednesday afternoon by Rev Father Vincent Taylor of Greensboro. The child died Tuesday after a short illness and was interred in Oakwood Cemetery. The father has been in Philadelphia for weeks while the family stayed in High Point. The loss greatly sorrowed the mother.
Washington January 1. Internal Revenue Commissioner Roper ruled that Members of Congress, though exempt from the occupational tax on incomes above 6000, must still pay the regular income tax. The ruling states that congressmen are not government officers or employees exempt from tax.
London reports that the Bolshevik government has moved to confiscate Panamanian ships. The revolutionary committee at Petrograd says about 40 steamships and several warships in Black Sea harbors were seized following the rift with Latvia.
President Wilson told a White House conference with a dozen Republican and Democrat senators that proposed moves to create a super war cabinet and a director of munitions would hinder war conduct and are unnecessary. The session marked continued opposition to the bills.
Part of the Driver Harris Wire company plant in Harrison New Jersey burned today in a blaze that caused about 700000 in damage. Two four story buildings were destroyed and firemen narrowly escaped injury as a wall collapsed. President Frank L Driver called the incident likely an accident.
