Hodges Hints No New Taxes Amid Better Economy

Gov. Hodges, at a year end news conference in Raleigh, suggested improved national conditions may reduce revenue hunting for the 1959 General Assembly. He said the budget message will be comprehensive and declined to confirm new taxes, citing a brighter economic picture and North Carolina's relatively strong position. Hodges lauded 1958 industrial expansion of over 253 million dollars, crediting local groups for much of the gain.

Hoffa Halts New York Police Picket Plan

Hoffa told New York aides to avoid interfering with police operations as a planned union picket aimed at cutting fuel and supplies to police installations was canceled. He said he had not been informed of the New York organizing drive and insisted tighter control over labor actions. State Attorney General Lefkowitz pledged to stop any interference with the police department or other agencies.

Search party finds 2 year old in freezing mountain night

In Barstow California a massive search with over 250 volunteers and police swept the San Bernardino Mountains for 8 hours after Karen Coffer 2 ran away from her mountain home Tuesday afternoon. A civilian finder George Gutierrez 20 located the girl about seven miles from home along a dim path. She was in good condition as temperatures were expected to drop to 20 degrees.

Teacher Snatched on Havana Flight After Question About Castro

Louisville teachers Louis Brantley 22 and James Reid 38 were detained by Cuban secret police in Havana after Brantley asked how far Fidel Castro was from the city. They said officials chased them and they were released late Tuesday and flew to Miami.

Governors Invited to Russia by Soviet Union

The Soviet Union invited eight state governors and Hawaii to visit Russia in June this summer. The nine-member Governors Conference Executive Committee, meeting in Chicago, received the invitation. NYU and the Institute of International Education may sponsor if funds are raised. Brevard Cranfield announced the plan with several foundations approached for underwriting costs.
