Life may have begun from interstellar “dirty ice” grains
Pioneering experiments suggest life’s precursors could form from frozen mixtures in interstellar space. Dr J Mayo Greenberg and colleagues produced dirty ice from water ammonia and methane at ultra cold temperatures, exposed it to UV radiation, then found complex organic molecules including a cyanide acetylene pair. The findings imply prebiogenic materials may arise independently of planets, though cautions note amino acids can be made in labs and do not prove life’s origins.
