Fudgey the Duck Captures Bass on Southern Lakes

Hubert and Rose Greene of Lake Lure and Spindale tell of their mallard Fudgey who points bass rather than birds. The duck held a four minute frozen pose above minnows and later helped land nine and ten pound largemouths on Nantahala Lake. The Greens adopted him after finding the abandoned duckling in July and now keep him close at hand on fishing trips and at home.

In 1977 memories span coastal hunts and river skiffs. Waterfowl at dawn, doves in fields, quail calls, bass and crappie catches, a six point buck, and a Portsmouth Island voyage frame a year of fishing, hunting, and tides. The old sea captain’s philosophy, voiced on Portsmouth shore, laments laws and enforcement, urging wildlife stewardship and sensible coastal oversight as 1978 approaches.
