Engineers attempt to swing a radio beam into the Adirondacks to locate a Boston Cleveland airliner lost on a mountain top. Officials say pilot Ernest Dryer's report of Rockwood near Fulton county was erroneous and the plane's radio is fading. The party, stranded in a snowstorm, sent pleas for help as fuel was diverted to a giant signal fire to aid rescue efforts.
Eight Johnson county and New York residents were convicted of kidnapping three young girls and taking them to New York for immoral purposes. Judge Frank A. Daniels imposed long prison terms from 2 to 20 years, with some sentences to run concurrently. Defense plans an appeal to the state supreme court. Those convicted in Camelia Price case include Clinton Beasely 22 with 12 to 15 years and Arthur Krane 25 with 20 years. In the Josephine Smith and Ogolla Barbour case, sentences ranged from 2 to 4 years up to 15 to 20 years for others.
Japan formally notified the United States that after December 31, 1936 it will not be bound by the Washington naval treaty. Ambassador Hiros Saito handed Secretary Hull the notice and expressed hope for a new pact within two years. He said Japan is willing to discard its navy if a common maximum limit for the United States, Great Britain, and the Far East is set. He dismissed fears of a naval race, calling all concerned governments rational.
Raleigh December 29 Capus M Waynick was named chairman of the state highway and public works commission after the resignation of R B Jeffress who handed his notice to Governor Ehringhaus in Greensboro. Waynick has served as assistant chairman for a month and was sworn in by Associate Justice Michael Schenck.

Hollywood December 29 Lowell Sherman the film actor director known for She Done Him Wrong died in a Hollywood hospital after a brief illness caused by pneumonia. He had suffered laryngitis for months and had gone to the studio last Thursday against doctors orders before being admitted.
