Alco Wage Talks Stalemate With Steelworkers Over Raises
About 6,000 production workers demand 16.8 cents an hour and extra benefits, while Alco cites a higher cost if all demands are granted. Locomotive division workers average 2.21 dollars hourly and ordnance workers 1.88. Alco closed its Diesel locomotive division October 22 and the ordnance plant two days later after a slowdown order from the Steelworkers. A USW local at the Auburn plant representing 1,100 workers rejected a similar offer, with the plant strikebound since October 20. Dunkirk plant, struck August 29, reopened December 13 under a Federal Court order for nickel pipe production needs.
