Democratic leaders plan spring action on a new middle income housing program to be outlined by President Truman in the state of the union. A preliminary draft exists and targets homes selling for seven to nine thousand dollars, modeled on Senator Sparkman's bill.
Veterans groups press for a senate pension bill and a house insurance measure as top priorities at the session start. A background $8.5 billion cost is cited for the pension plan which would grant a 72 dollar monthly pension at 65 with limits. a second bill would extend life insurance options for service connected disabilities.
Police in Charlotte detain 50 year old David McCall on murder charges after his wife Louise McCall 46 was chained and beaten to death on Christmas night. The couple's 15 year old daughter Virginia described the 30 minute attack with a heavy slab a belt and a rubber covered electric cord following a dispute over supper.
New York report to the AAAS shows low income Americans eat better yet still consume less milk meat and calcium than higher income groups. Dr. Hazel K. Police hold 59 year old Charlie Eubanks of Union South Carolina for questioning after his 16 year old daughter Virginia Grace Eubanks was found unconscious with a skull fracture in her home on Christmas Eve. Dr. Elvio H. Sadun of Tulane University School of Medicine announced a new B vitamin named PGA at the AAAS meeting in New York. The vitamin protects chickens against parasites, marking the first known vitamin to guard against worms and similar parasites in living tissue.
The National Committee for the Repeal of Wartime Excise Taxes formed in New York on December 27 to press for repeal of excise taxes on luxury goods. Comprised mainly of executives from taxed industries, the group excludes alcohol tobacco and gasoline and cites items such as furs jewelry entertainment transportation tickets phonograph records luggage cameras and telephone calls as affected. Delays stem from lengthy British negotiations over explicit terms before agreements are finalized.
General MacArthur authorized Japan to spend 8.6 billion yen to expand Nippon s merchant marine, targeting 275000 gross tons of new ships and conversion of 272000 tons of wartime vessels. Private imports resume New Year s day as part of shipping rehabilitation.
In Philadelphia on Christmas Day Oscar Milligan a 76 year old retired attorney waved goodbye to his son John as he stood on the sidewalk. Milligan suddenly collapsed and died before his son could reach him as the son was preparing to leave to return to Williamsburg Virginia.
Fog will linger for at least 24 more hours over North and South Carolina with dense mist grounding many commercial flights and slowing highway traffic as southeastern temperatures rise into the sixties. A stationary front is expected to produce higher readings before the fog clears.
The Associated Press reports over 500 holiday deaths from violent causes across the United States, with nearly 400 from traffic accidents. Texas led with 55 violent deaths. states tally traffic fires and other incidents, including a San Antonio fire killing a mother and six children.

Carl Schwartz a 39 year old ranch foreman faced formal murder charges over the Christmas eve shooting of Jane Maggard Dickson a 30 year old San Francisco society columnist. Lyman Lacy who worked with Dickson was wounded in the attack at the Black Point ranch near Santa Rosa California. District Attorney Charles J McGoldrick said the complaint would be signed as Schwartz denied the killings claiming he did not remember the shootings and witnesses said he acted after drinking on his birthday. Mrs Schwartz said her husband despised society people and Mrs Dickson in particular.
President Truman returns from a Christmas break in Missouri to begin work at his Kansas City penthouse. He plans to finalize three congressional messages in Washington, with delivery likely after January 4. Margaret Truman unveiled an Andrew Jackson statue in Jackson County.
New York December 27 stock traders operated in low gear as prices scarcely budged. Pepsi-Cola weakened with a drop near 8 percent. Gains were reported for U S Steel and several others including Studebaker Sears Roebuck International Telephone American Smelting Phelps Dodge Eastman Kodak American Can and Baltimore & Ohio. Major movers also included General Motors Caterpillar United Aircraft Dow Chemical Du Pont General Electric Union Pacific Loews and others.
