Lye Poisoning Fatal to Baby in North Carolina

A 19 months old baby died in a Charlotte hospital after drinking lye nine days earlier. Final rites will be held for Carl Edward Dotson of near Shelby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Dotson of Polkville county. The child drank the lye while the mother did laundry.

Rescue slows as Saipan fights savage gale en route to Greenland

On the U S S Saipan the carrier fights 100 mph winds slowing to 10 knots as it aims to rescue 13 stranded air force personnel. Capt. Joseph L. Two Seamen Rescued By Coast Guard

Coast guardsmen rescued two seamen from the stern of the Argentine tanker El Capitan 70 miles from yesterday’s break-up. The men were plucked by a small boat from the drifting stern as the Cherokee towed the bow section. The Agassiz would land the survivors at Morehead City after a three hour combat with sub freezing temps high winds and 20 foot seas.
