In Seoul a 22 story Taeyonkak Hotel fire left at least 75 dead and dozens missing after an explosion in a second floor coffee shop. About 203 guests and 235 employees were inside, with 102 hospitalized. Nine Americans among the guests were unaccounted for as rescuers searched through debris.
A Peruvian airliner with 92 aboard is believed to have attempted an emergency landing in dense east central jungle amid unconfirmed reports of a low flying plane with one engine on fire. Officials say no trace of the Electra turboprop belonging to Lansa has been found since it disappeared Friday on a Lima to Iquitos run.
On Christmas Day in Saigon the war saw 11 South Vietnamese soldiers killed and 37 wounded with three missing as 28 enemy dead were reported. In Charlotte North Carolina the Jobs for Ex-Offenders program moves beyond a pilot phase under the Department of Correction. Palmer Paulson Associates runs the placement effort with NAB support aiming to place 200 ex-prisoners and establish ongoing guidelines. About 65 percent of placed participants remain on their jobs, and officials expect the plan to reduce crime by aiding reentry. Governor Bob Scott endorses the effort while L W Barrett leads the department and foresees broad community benefits.
