Christmas holiday traffic deaths totaled 521 over 78 hours ending Monday night. Fires caused 83 deaths and miscellaneous accidents 85, pushing overall violent deaths to 689. Weather and icy roads contributed to the high toll across many states.
Concord New Hampshire Governor Wesley Powell orders strict enforcement to wipe out distinctions between driving after drinking and drunken driving. State police are told to pick up and lock up any person driving after drinking under existing law.

Mrs. Walter Campman faces an uncertain future for her five granddaughters Judy 15 Rita 13 Mona 10 Sandra 11 and Janet 3 after a Christmas Eve crash killed their parents Phillip Campman and Mrs. Campman near Warren. The crash also killed Lloyd Palmer 45 and Kathleen Smith 37. Palmer’s daughter Mary 15 and William Slocum 37 and Dorothy 33 were hospitalized. The family had hosted a dinner before the fatal drive.
State Senator Max Thomas announces he has hired Irving Carlile Floyd Crouse and Joe Branch to press a Supreme Court challenge over an interim election for the unexpired Lieutenant Governor term. He previously filed with the State Board of Elections but was rejected due to a ruling that no interim election is provided. Plans call for a Winston-Salem meeting Friday to finalize the court test and timing remains to be decided.

An antisubmarine vessel was blasted amidships near Bangkok on the Chao Phya River killing the commanding officer and three other Thai sailors. The ship burned for about twenty minutes before the flames subsided.
