The Associated Press reports a looming all time holiday death record as motorists travel home. By 10 a.m. traffic fatalities reached 461, with fires at 51 and other accidents at 60, totaling 572. Experts warn the 78 hour period could push deaths past 560 and possibly 624 if eight highway deaths per hour persist.
Violent deaths, many on highways during the long Christmas weekend, claimed at least 15 lives in North Carolina. The fatalities include Julius A. Suddreth, 86, in a Lenoir area fire, and Marine Cpl. Maurice Borders, 25, of Shelby, in a wreck near Ellen i. Numerous traffic victims are listed with ages and hometowns across the state, from Whitakers to Albemarle, with others injured.
Three youths escaped death after a dynamite explosion triggered by a firecracker ripped their car apart on a rural dirt road eight miles north of Benson. George Coats 17 Atlee Roberts 15 and Howard Sorrell Jr. 17 were hospitalized with injuries as the car’s top flew 300 yards and debris spread 500 yards.
Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, announced a 300000 grant from the Amelie McAlister Upshur estate for a new 2000 seat auditorium to be named McAlister Auditorium. The gift requires the school to raise additional funds to complete construction. The facility honors William H. McAlister, father of the late Mrs. Amelie McAlister Upshur of New York.

The coroner reported the mother supported the family on a small pension after her husband died recently.

The 122nd annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science runs through Friday with sessions across all sciences.
