American forces redraw in Korea amid Chinese intervention
General Douglas MacArthur described the November UN offensive as exposing vast secret political and military decisions. He reported the 10th Corps has joined the Eighth Army in a withdrawal from the northeast and that losses were light with no materiel lost. Combined forces evacuated 105000 American and allied troops and nearly 100000 non Communist North Koreans, leaving a devastated port at the northeast. Almond assumes command of a renovated force as Lt. Gen. Walton Walker is killed near the front. He stressed political misgivings behind the withdrawal and criticized interceding Chinese assurances as futile against China’s entry into the war.
